un « h » muet : a silent "h" grammaire
Un "h" muet is not pronounced at all in French. For example, the "h" at the start of hôpital: we say l'hôpital (pronounced "lopital"), as if the word began with a vowel. Example:
un « h » aspiré : an aspirated "h" grammaire
Un "h" aspiré prevents elision and liaison. For example, the "h" at the start of héros: we say le héros (not l'héros: no elision), and un héros is pronounced without sounding the "n" at the end of un (no liaison). It is as if the word began with a consonant. Example:
  • "Pour résumer, tout est invariable quand il y a une voyelle ou un h muet."
