Definition

un « h » muet : a silent ‘h’ grammaire

Un ‘h’ muet is not pronounced at all in French. For example, the ‘h’ at the start of hôpital: we say l’hôpital (pronounced ‘lopital’), as if the word began with a vowel. Example:

un « h » aspiré : an aspirated ‘h’ grammaire

Un ‘h’ aspiré prevents elision and liaison. For example, the ‘h’ at the start of héros: we say le héros (not l’héros: no elision), and un héros is pronounced without sounding the ‘n’ at the end of un (no liaison). It is as if the word began with a consonant. Example:
