Situating an event in time

Here are some handy time expressions which will help you order the chronology of events:

• For past events: avant before, hier yesterday, autrefois in the past, l’autre jour the other day, il y a longtemps a long time ago, (un peu) plus tôt (a little) earlier, un jour one day
• For present events: maintenant now, aujourd’hui today, à présent at present, de nos jours nowadays
• For future events: après after/afterwards, demain tomorrow, bientôt soon, (un peu) plus tard (a little) later, dans le futur in the future
• For sudden events: soudain suddenly, alors then, tout à coup all of a sudden, c’est alors que and that is when

Avant je ne sortais jamais le soir. Alors j’ai rencontrĂŠ Victor et ses amis, et aujourd’hui grâce Ă  eux, j’adore sortir la nuit ! Before, I never went out in the evening. Then I met Victor and his friends, and today thanks to them, I love going out!
De nos jours on aime bien cuisiner, mais dans le futur, on ne mangera que des pilules. These days we like cooking, but in the future, we'll only eat pills.
